You create my “I.” The “I” can only exist if there is a “you” to tell me that there is an “I.” We cannot discover our true “I” by looking at ourselves. The “I” is born from relationships with others. The “I” is outward-focused, not preoccupied with its own ego. I become through my relationships with you, and when I become “I,” then I say: “you.” All real life is an encounter! Motto: Whether we think we can or cannot, we are right.
– Many predicted a bright career for you when you performed in the play Artis klusē, Alise klusē, but then you left. Why?
– I don’t know. It feels like some things just happen on their own. Maybe I’m not ready to be fully open. That’s why I had to create the Nora persona. But I take full responsibility for Nora’s actions.
– No desire to return to the theater?
– I’ll smile and stay silent. I do have a desire to create my own theater. I want to find a language and form to express what I want to say to people. I’m just a bit too young for these things.
– Did you always want to become an actress from childhood?
– By the age of ten, I was already performing at the National Theatre. I didn’t have thoughts about who I would be or what I would do in life. I’ve very purposefully followed my path to becoming who I am.
– How did the idea for Labās ziņas come about?
– In spirit, soul, and language. Now there are two new projects that, hopefully, will start in September.
– But how exactly did you come up with the jokes for all these shows? Where did you draw inspiration from?
– Everywhere, truly everywhere. I create the jokes together with Ru (Ilgvars Rukers from Radio 101. – Ed. note). There aren’t really any comedy shows in Latvia. You should see how everyone laughs here, nourished by the sun.
– What do they laugh about?
– I don’t know. Chemistry and magic are inexplicable. About everything—life here is much simpler. You can’t take a lot of things seriously here. Joke after joke. Word after word. Smile after smile.
– You joked a lot about politics in the show. Have you ever wanted to take power into your own hands and change something, like running for office?
– No, I don’t want to and couldn’t be a politician. I don’t know how to lie. Many of the jokes in the show weren’t even jokes but harsh truths, about which all you can do is smile sadly.
– Where do you get all that energy and positivity?
– God, people, and love—that’s my source of energy.
– Do people recognize you on the street?
– Of course they do, but I’m treated very kindly, and I’m grateful to Latvians for that. It’s easier to create something new when you’re supported and loved.
– What’s been occupying your mind the most lately?
– Realizing that I don’t understand a thing about life and that I need to learn. Lenin comes to mind—learn, learn, and learn again.
– Did you have to become independent early on?
– Well, practically, I became independent early. But theoretically, God has spoiled me with a loving and amazing mom and family. I’ve been very fortunate to have wise and soulful friends in my life.
– When did you adopt the name Nora Koks?
– Hmm… The name Nora Koks came about some five years ago. By chance and coincidence. Koks, because of “priede” (pine). Nora, because my mom sometimes called me Noriņa, and since I didn’t want to mix my private life with my on-screen persona, we decided Nora Koks was the best option. It also sounds better than Ance Priede.
– And which name do you use when traveling in Sicily?
– Ance. Everyone there loves me as Ance.
– Are Ance and Nora two different people?
– Definitely. I don’t think people are interested in Ance.
